Innovation and Institutions: Stoppers or Driving Forces for Sustainability?

Abstract:

The current article aims to highlight the fact that sustainability and mainly, environmental performance is intrinsically corroborated with innovation, the protection of intellectual property and a macroeconomic environment that is favourable to investment. Such an approach leads to the hypothesis that in order to adopt the project of sustainable development we need an appropriate, a priori established framework for evaluation, which conditions practical action. In other words, a structure resulting from a process of adapting institutions to a responsible behaviour that most often implies the conscious and rational renunciation to the exclusive pursuit of the satisfaction of individual appetites, desires and aspirations so as to serve improved future circumstances.
