Lack of Knowledge – The Bottleneck of Czech Project Management

Abstract:

In the Czech Republic, project management is relatively well established both in terms of theory and practice. Project principles and methodologies are being used as operational framework by many companies and enterprises, although the results of the surveys organized by Ernst&Young and Project Management Association Czech Republic (SPR) suggest that the implementation process is not bringing as bright results as could be expected. According to SPR, only 36% of the respondents successfully achieved the project goals, less than a third of the projects did not exceeded the budget and just 17% did not end up off schedule (Projektmanazer.cz, 2013). In addition, Ernst&Young stated that almost 15% of the projects exceed budget by 21-50%. Their survey also shows that 30% of the projects crossed the deadline by more than 20% (EY, 2014). Both studies focused on analyzing the causes of these failures and both alluded as one of the main factors the quality of project human resources, namely the lack of education and knowledge. The following paper presents an assessment of the project problems identified in relation to the Czech project environment along with the current status of knowledge management and suggests possible causal relationships that should be further investigated in future research.
