Abstract:

Regional development of Slovakia is strongly influenced by EU regional policy. With Slovakia’s accession to the EU in 2004, social and economic processes got more intense prominent regional dimensions. Article focuses its attention on the problem of land and its grabbing for development projects. The Slovak Republic is one of the transition countries, which since 1989 has transferred to a market economy and, in this context, it was necessary to build a new system of economic instruments and legislative changes and thus create conditions for the development activities as well as the entry of foreign investors. Solutions that are represented by unilateral interests of developers and investors due to improper implementation of development projects “on green meadows” by grabbing quality agricultural land may have a negative impact on the development of the area. On the other hand, they are marked by efforts trying to catch up with development and join the latest trends with all the associated risks. Mostly imported models are implanted into our country with its distinctive historical development and economic, social and cultural context. In the area of industrial parks and major business centers, the subjects of interest are suburban areas. Selection of sites focuses mainly on green meadows and largely avoids the reconstruction of existing industrial complexes.
