Comparative Study for Visualization of Factory Layout Elements Using Augmented Reality and Point Cloud

Abstract:

Factory layout visualization and processing is a field in which virtual reality (VR) has already been successfully applied. There are several known methods of layout designing, ranging from simple to highly sophisticated ones. In this paper, we present two case studies of the visualization of equipment in an empty space in a factory hall. A referential mechanical testing machine will be placed into this place in the near future. Two methods are discussed: use of a model in augmented reality (AR) and placing a CAD model in a laser scanned point cloud. The advantages, disadvantages, effects and problems of these two solutions are described and compared in this paper. The augmented reality method uses a Vuzix STAR 1200XLD glasses with transparent head-mounted display (HMD). The machine is projected into the user’s field of view in the actual factory hall. The point cloud method involves laser scanning the hall first, then placing a CAD model into the point cloud. The result can be viewed in a CAVE- or Powerwall-like device.
