Cost of Obesity. Do We Finally Know Anything Tangible?

Abstract:

Obesity in a complex and multi-causal problem, rooted in the sedentary nature of modern post-industrial life. McKinsey Global Institute (2014) estimated the obesity to be one of the top three global social burdens worldwide generated by human beings, right after smoking and armed violence, whereas leaving alcoholism, illiteracy, climate change and many other burdens behind. However, there are countries such as Mexiko where the obesity is ranked as a burden number one. Globally, 1.4 billion people are overweight and 500 million obese (Sodano, V., Verneau, F., 2013). Furthermore, the extreme obesity (body mass index over 40) was really rare whereas now the share of extremely obese population is around 5 % (Finkelstein et al., 2010).
