Occupational Health and Safety Issues in Ghana: Case study of Tema Oil Refinery (TOR)

Abstract:

This study was carried out at Tema Oil Refinery in Ghana to find out the extent of understanding of safety regulations among the workers and how to enhance safety issues. Explorative data were collected and processed in terms of compliance of health and safety legislation, reporting of accidents, prevention of similar accidents in future, investigation of accidents, the use of safety records and logs and existence of training programs at all levels. The study revealed majority of the workers who participated know much about safety regulations but there is less implementation. It also shows that management does not pay much attention to how much an injury could cost the company in terms of money, as they do not calculate time lost as money lost. The paper therefore suggested there is need to improve on safety issues.
