Higher Learning and its Tasks in the Field of Moral Education: A Study of Secondary School Students in Poland

Abstract:

The following article considers the significance of stimulating moral development at the stage of higher education. Although several different visions of higher education are examined, the idea that the moral shaping of a human being should be one of the more important goals overlooked during college or university studies is among the main postulates of this paper.

A research conducted among 304 students of Polish secondary schools is also discussed. The sample group consists of young people likely to start college or university education in the near future. The study concentrates primarily on the moral values this group identifies with.

The main research tool employed in the research is the Ethics Questionnairedesigned by Wojciszke. The questionnaire measures the degree of identification with the values included in five ethical codes: the ethics of autonomy, the ethics of collectivism, the ethics of the common good, the ethics of dignity and the ethics of productivity.

Our aim is to provide both the legislators responsible for the curricula at higher education institutions and the academic staff with a study on people they might soon have an impact on. From this perspective, the research results provide a proposed answer to the question of the importance of moral development stimulation in higher learning institutions.
