Smart Routing In Software-Defined Wide Area Networks For Remote Collaboration And Telemedicine

Abstract:

Software-Defined Wide Area Networks (SD-WANs) provide centralized traffic control and flexibility that are highly valuable for real-time multimedia applications such as remote collaboration and telemedicine. However, most existing routing approaches are evaluated mainly in simulation and are optimized for TCP traffic, offering limited insight into real-world performance for delay-sensitive UDP flows. This paper proposes a dynamic, QoS-aware routing algorithm designed for SD-WAN deployments. The algorithm leverages global network awareness to reduce packet loss while improving utilization of mesh-topology resources. We implement and evaluate the solution in a physical Linuxbased SD-WAN testbed. Experimental results show improved stability and reduced packet loss for UDP multimedia transmission, achieved without observed disruptions in the testbed. These findings demonstrate the potential of intelligent routing to enhance Quality of Experience in real SD-WAN environments and support emerging remote collaboration and telemedicine services.
