Abstract:
In 1997, Multimedia University (MMU) had started its first online learning system to supplement the needs for other methods of teaching and learning process, aside from a normal classroom method. The prototype system provided notes and extra tutorials that can be downloaded by the students to do their revision and allow them to have their own self-paced study. Later in 2001, MMU has begun to upgrade the online learning system to manipulate the usage of multimedia, in order to fully utilize the system in the process of teaching and learning. Multimedia Learning System (MMLS) served as a web-based courseware delivery machine to integrate interactivity in multimedia contents. The latest version of MMLS in MMU now is using the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) standard, which uses the SCORM compliant learning management system called Sharable Object Content (SCO) to deliver the different learning objects for different topics. The objective of this paper is to review the usage of this MMLS and its effect in the teaching and learning process after having the interactive multimedia content elements embedded in the system. Two different groups of students were tested where one group was given a chance to use the MMLS to help them in their study and only the traditional classroom method was done on the other group. The questionnaire and the test results obtained from the two different groups indicated that the students agreed that the usage of multimedia really improve their understanding and stimulate their minds. With a few improvements on technical limitation and the cooperation from the instructors to upload the materials, MMLS would really facilitate both the instructors and the students in the teaching and learning process.
