Abstract:
The Romanian health system is characterized by: lack of transparency, poor funding, and insufficient numbers of medical personnel, outdated equipment and negligence. These risk factors are manifesting sometimes together, giving rise to correlated risks that appear in cascade, causing major losses both financial and human. Unfortunately, most managers of health institutions in Romania show a lack of management skills and reaction to increasing risk exposure of the institution they lead. This is due to their political appointment or because they are physicians who aren’t specialized in hospital risk management. In the case study is presented a tragedy occurred at an important hospital in Romania, where due to the manifestation of several types of risks have generated human and financial losses, and the hospital reputation has reached a critical point. How can this situation be fixed? What are the ways of evaluation, monitoring and management of risks? And can the risks be prevented in time?
