An Exploratory Study of the Reluctance of Clinicians to Use New IT Systems in the UK National Health Service (NHS): A Proposed Research Discussion Paper

Abstract:

The National Health Service in the United Kingdom (NHS) has been investing billions of pounds on Information Technology (IT) and new IT systems to deliver better quality of care. Despite the potential benefits of these new IT systems, the adoption of these systems within the NHS is significantly slow. The clinicians' reluctance to use new IT systems at local levels is seen to be a significant factor in this respect. This proposed research aim to (1) deepen understanding of the organisational and technological factors and conditions that contributes to clinicians’ reluctance to use new IT systems in the NHS (2) offer practical guidelines that enables the NHS to reduce clinicians’ reluctance and consequently improve the  quality, safety and efficiency of healthcare delivery.
