Abstract:
Technology evolution is a nonlinear cyclic process of evolution within organizations. This process stipulates introduction of technology in the organization, use of technology and sees it become dominant in the organizational life, and its erosion or disappearance from the organization. This paper reviews three perspectives on technology lifecycle, i.e., techno-centric, human-centric, and innovation-institutionalisation. It concludes that, although the first two perspectives have been used extensively in research and practice, they lack considering the effect of technology on various organizational sub-institutions and vice versa. The innovation-institutionalisation perspective has only recently begun to attract attention as a new stream in thinking about the role of technology in organizations which takes into account factors such as institutional pressures, institutional change, and broader operating environment of the organization like organizational culture, social structure, and competitive environment
