An Optimized Messaging Framework for Mobile Web service Clients

Abstract:

Messaging via XML based SOAP is the main performance bottleneck for constrained mobile Web service clients. We present a framework which can improve the performance of message handling for mobile clients, smartphones in particular. The two main design principles behind the framework are, firstly, the separation of static headers and payloads for each message and, secondly, the use of a binary XML specification to improve parsing and serialization on smartphones. We describe our approach as a work in progress and present the main components of an optimized messaging mechanism suitable for mobile Web service clients. This research work has a high practical value, since m-commerce will eventually be based on a Web services over a serviceoriented technology. Our innovative approach can provide a better quality of service to resource constrained devices which will not suffer from processing overheads associated with the verbosity of SOAP messages.
