Analysis of the Romanian Fruit and Vegetable Sector

Abstract:

Romania has a high potential for fruit and vegetable production due mainly to the high natural soil fertility and climate diversity. However, besides favorable soil and climate conditions for fruit and vegetable production, Romania cannot rely on the technical facilities characteristic to market economy. The number of agricultural operations per size class in both fruits and vegetables is up to three ha. The situation is critical if we take into account that physical people operate over 90% of them. This explains the low level of technology, the low level professional training of the farmers, the low level of production management and the large amounts of fruits and vegetables marketed at the gate of the farm or on street markets.
