Analyzing Information Technology Usage of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises

Abstract:

Nowadays, rapid changes in information technology (IT) force enterprises to adapt new developments. With their quick adaptation skills on both taking decision and implementation, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are among the most dynamic actors and at this point they are at a more advantageous place with regard to their competitors. In recent years, the information technologies are started to be used frequently by SMEs in Turkey but unfortunately the usage has not reached to desired levels yet. The aim of this study is to put forward the factors affecting the information technology usage in SMEs. To be able to evaluate the IT usage, a survey questionnaire was prepared and conducted to 112 SMEs in Istanbul. Data were analyzed by Descriptive, Independent T-Test, One-Way ANOVA and Multiple Regression Analyses. Findings are almost consistent with the previous researches. Most of SMEs uses IT for their basic needs. IT infrastructures and sectors of companies affect the level of their IT usage. The study also highlights how general characteristics, IT infrastructure, sector, IT training approach and IT usage aims contribute to the IT usage of companies.
