Application of Lean Concepts in Shipbuilding on the Example of ÇIMTAS Module & Shipyard

Abstract:

Lean Management is a concept that has been successfully used in manufacturing companies since the 70s. XX century, but in practice, only some approach it as it deserves. This is also the case with shipyards, where the Project Management approach is used first (Tingxin, Jinscheng, 2021). The authors also know it from the autopsy. However, since both the author and the author are practising Lean Management specialists based on participatory observation and based on the method of logical inference, they noticed that combining the Lean approach with the design approach in shipyards could bring them additional benefits. Moreover, this is proven by the practices of some shipyards, m.in Çimtas Module & Shipyard. Therefore, their postulate for most significant than the current use of Lean Management assumptions and tools in the shipbuilding industry is directed mainly to the managers of Polish shipyards. This article's main objective is to assess the use of the Lean concept in the shipbuilding industry based on literature sources and to determine the possibility of using Lean Management in repairing shipyards. The auxiliary objective is to present the case of the Turkish shipyard Çimtas Module & Shipyard, which in the debt of available data, is currently one of the leaders in the application of Lean Management in the non-Japanese shipbuilding industry.
