Abstract:
The mining sector plays a significant role in the global economy. However, this industry is associated with high accidents rate. Thanks to advanced data analysis algorithms, Artificial Intelligence (AI) can monitor and predict potential threats, identify risks, and recommend appropriate preventive actions. The aim of this paper is to analyze the existing research on AI approaches in shaping the safety culture in the mining industry. Authors tried to provide a fresh look at the current AI solutions dedicated for increasing safety in mining operations, taking into account the horizon of the last eight years (2017-2024). The six-step methodology was proposed to retrieve and analyze relevant literature. Four stated research questions were answered, providing information about AI in Shaping Safety Culture in the Mining Industry. The research revealed that there is a growing researchers’ interest in the analyzed subject, as in 2023, 6.5 times more articles concerning AI solutions for safety in the mining industry were published in Scopus than in 2018. The same situation is in 2024. It was also found out that the main authors coming from China published the most papers on the analyzed subject and in the second place is the USA. It indicates that in these countries work on the application of AI for safety in the mining industry is the most intensive. The study also revealed that machine learning tools play a significant role in the proposed solutions improving safety the mining industry. The most popular are solutions based on Neural Networks, including deep Convolutional Neutral Network, Bayesian neural network, Support Vector Machine and Extreme Learning Machine.
