Assessment of the Level of Specialization on the Example of Analyzing the Level of Innovation of European Regions

Abstract:

In the current economic reality, we are increasingly encountering a clear specialization not only of enterprises but also of regions. In addition to those known for years related to the production of e.g. alcohols (cognac, champagne) or coal (Ruhr area, Silesia), there are new ones related to other fields, including the development of innovation and / or modern technologies. Analysis of the focus on a given sector starts with examining the human resources hidden in it or the impact of the production of a given sector on a given region or its importance in a broader administrative sense. The aim of the article is to measure the supposed innovative function of European regions using tools used in other fields, e.g. in tourism. The article uses data from the OECD. This data is of a spatial and temporal nature. As a tool, the quotient and location index, the index of specialization, and the exogenous sector diversification index were used. The results point to the emergence of clear symptoms of regional specialization through innovation-oriented.
