Barriers to Outbound Open Innovation: Literature Review

Abstract:

This paper evaluates the literature regarding barriers to outbound open innovation in businesses. While open innovation is a fundamental process for understanding, defining and developing new technologies between organizations, and when it has been attracted much attention by researchers in recent years in many disciplines; literature analysis identifies an opportunity to further understand outbound open innovation process. The paper first discusses the notion of outbound open innovation and briefly examines the relevant literature. A more detailed review of the current research on open innovation identifies three different core processes (inside-out, coupled and outside-in). While the open innovation is still at early stages, more attention has been devoted to research on inbound open innovation than outbound open innovation. In addition, potential disadvantages and barriers to open innovation have been relatively neglected. We classified the barriers into six broad categories including internal, external, governance, technical, management, and employees. Based on our literature review we propose shifting the research focus towards outbound open innovation and investigation of barriers towards it.
