Burnout and Suffering at Work : A Profiling Study of Middle Managers

Abstract:

As part of our doctoral research on burnout, we identified the various demands and pressures that contribute to this feeling of distress among mid-level managers in the private sector in Morocco. Workplace stress, excessive workload, lack of recognition, and role ambiguity emerged as key factors leading to burnout. Based on the techniques and methods used in this doctoral study, we conducted a detailed profiling study to gain deeper insights into these challenges.

The objective of this article is to share with the research community the approach we adopted to identify, analyze, and understand the distinct profiles of burned-out mid-level managers. Through qualitative interviews and psychometric questionnaires conducted with the concerned managers, we uncovered the primary causes of their suffering and exhaustion. This in-depth analysis enabled us to categorize them into four key profiles : the "Autopilot," the "Excessively Devoted," the "Work-Suffocated," and the "Wasted Talent," each representing a unique manifestation of workplace burnout.
