Capital Concentration of the Polish Sugar Industry as a Response to Changes in the International Environment

Abstract:

The aim of the study is to analyse the ownership transformations of the production part of the Polish sugar industry in 1990-2015, during which the transition from multi-plant, unprofitable state enterprises to modern production plants being part of international sugar concerns took place. On the basis of statistical data, a study of capital concentration was carried out depending on changes taking place in the country and abroad. The Polish sugar industry with 76 small, under-capitalized sugar factories, has become an oligopoly competitive on the international stage, which survived the processes of political transformation, adaptation processes to accession to EU and the reform of the EU sugar market preparing the sector for liberalization of the CAP.
