Capstone Design Strategy Map for Higher Education

Abstract:

Recently, colleges have experienced increasing concerns because of the overall reduction in the number of students, financial difficulties, and the demand for educational reform. Various efforts have been made to solve these issues with learning and educational methodologies such as self-directed learning and career guidance based on industry-academic collaboration. However, despite these learning methods having new names, in many cases, their actual content and operational context indicate little difference from those of previous educational methodologies. Further, despite ongoing review and educational efforts to investigate and develop approaches in which students solve problems autonomously, colleges and college students are merely undertaking these efforts without specific goal setting and methodologies for implementation. Moreover, most recent capstone design courses have been focused only on engineering students, raising the demand for an integrated model to be applied to colleges of liberal arts, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering. This study’s contribution is that it has produced a capstone design map that can be used in most academic fields. This model has established a convergent capstone design methodology based on a compromise between the strategic models of previous studies and the model proposed by this researcher. It is not limited to colleges of engineering and is differentiated from other models in that it is a creative college education model designed to foster future talents.
