Abstract:
Malaysia is rich with natural environments, such as rainforests, mountains, waterfalls, beaches, reefs and wildlife. These natural assets can be preserved and commercialised as ecotourism. Ecotourism is not only about showcasing the natural assets of Malaysia, but also ability to generate income for the nation. Unfortunately, Malaysian ecotourism have not been aggressively marketed due to sceptical beliefs that the excessive exposure will negatively affect the sustainability of the environment, which is also harmful for society. The adoption of capsule hotels as an innovative accommodation to cater to ecotourism is expected to boost the niche market momentum without leaving any negative effect to the natural ecology. This research is proposing the potential to generate income for the nation through ecotourism by adopting capsule hotels, which are normally smaller in size than any other types of accommodations. The tiny size of capsule hotels which can be stacked into layers is securing the nature from being cleared. The innovative ecotourism accommodation through capsule hotels is expected to enhance the value of social, environment and economic benefits. With this initiative, the Malaysian ecotourism industry will be stretched further without damaging natural sustainability. The initiative to stimulate socio-economic development through capsule hotels in ecotourism will only be successful if there is a consensus with the implementation which will be taken by all stakeholders, especially with the government, entrepreneurs and local communities to welcome tourists in ecotourism.
