Cash-support for Reestablishment as an Instrument of Immigration Management (Sweden Example)

Abstract:

Cash-support for reestablishment is an instrument that operates in several EU countries, the longest in Sweden. Its aim is a financial help for the immigrant to come back home. In connection with the information from the Swedish government that appeared in the media in 2024 about a possible increase in this support value, it is worth taking a closer look at its impact on migration in the country. The support is voluntary and is offered to citizens of selected third countries, where functioning is difficult due to the political situation. An important aspect of this benefit is its impact on controlling migration. However, it does not occur in isolation, it is accompanied by the broad impact of other activities of Swedish institutions, which ultimately seem to lead to a gradual decrease in the number of immigrants to the country. A sensitive element of this instrument is its voluntary nature, which is an important issue underlying the legality of this support.
