Challenges and Strategies in Managing Inter-generational Employee Relationships in Malaysia

Abstract:

There are at least three generations of employees working in several  organisations in Malaysia, each with its own work expectations and perceptions. Employees from different generational groups should know and accept that the unique life experiences of each group have shaped their behaviours, attitudes, and work values. Work conflicts and clashes between generations could be avoided if employees from one group are careful not to complain and blame others from another group when they fail to achieve their personal goals and aspirations. This article highlights some of the potential sources of misperceptions and misunderstanding of employees belonging to the Baby Boomer, Generation X, and Generation Y groups. It also provides suggestions to improve the inter-generational relationships.
