Challenges in Measuring Digital Trade

Abstract:

Digital trade is becoming an increasingly important mode of conducting trade as a result of digital technology advancements, diffusion, and usage. This paper analyzes available methodologies and challenges in measuring digital trade. It identifies key challenges in measuring and recording digital trade, emphasizing data availability, classification difficulties, and regulatory inconsistencies. The paper further discusses advancements in digital trade measurement frameworks, highlighting newly developed methodologies and their implications for statistical accuracy and international comparability. However, limitations exist due to data fragmentation, uneven implementation of regulation, lack of standardization, and digital protectionism. The contribution of this research lies in its comprehensive assessment of current methodologies and challenges to improving digital trade measurement.
