Competitiveness and Sustainable Tourism Destination: Related Concepts or not?

Abstract:

Increasing the competitiveness of tourism destinations is one of the current challenges of the tourism industry. The conceptual delimitation of the competitiveness of the tourism destination implies the identification of comparative and competitive advantages that lead to obtaining economic and social benefits among the interested parties. The current concerns regarding the increase of the competitiveness of tourism destinations require finding solutions that will ensure the sustainability of tourism activities. This involves: well-preserved natural tourism attractions, tourism service providers that make efficient use of the resources at their disposal to carry out their activity, local community that retains its authenticity and benefits from the tourism exploitation of the place where they live, carrying out economic activities with low environmental impact, guidance of all stakeholders to ensure the sustainable development of the tourism destination, viable government programs on sustainable development policies implemented by local authorities. The aim of this paper is to investigate the link between competitiveness and sustainability of tourism destinations, as it follows from the literature.
