Consulting in the Implementation of ERP Systems – Benefits and Threats

Abstract:

Implementing ERP systems in an enterprise requires taking a number of actions to ensure full success of this process. It is particularly difficult to implement an ERP system in a small or medium-size enterprise due to their limited resources. The existing body of literature provides a great number of publications on launching ERP systems and instances of good and bad practices involving ERP. The aim of this article is to point to an additional aspect of launching ERP systems, i.e. the role of IT consulting in this type of projects. What was an inspiration to study this subject was the involvement of multiple authors in seeking critical elements for the successful implementation of enterprise resource planning. In order to achieve the goal of the article, I undertook the analysis of the literature on the subject and conduct surveys amongst those managers who decided to implement an ERP system in their organisation. This research is of a preliminary nature and its major limitation is the modest amount of collected feedback and the limited time scope and geographical range of the research. The results presented can be of useful reference to managers facing the implementation of IT projects with the assistance of external consultants.
