Contribution of Agriculture to Romania’s Gross Domestic Product

Abstract:

The paper analyzed Romania's GDP and GDP produced in agriculture in the period 2008-2019 pointing out the changes by resources and in the territory, and also in agriculture by micro regions. Descriptive statistics, and trend regression functions, correlation and determination coefficients were used to process the data. The results showed that, in 2019, Romania achieved Lei 1,53.8 Billion (Euro 222 Billion) GDP, almost double than in 2008. Trade, transportation, tourism, Industry, and Public services have the highest contribution to GDP. In the territory, the major contributors to GDP are three regions: Bucharest- Ilfov, North West and South Muntenia, together  accounting for 51.%. Agriculture carried out Lei 52.6 Billion GDP (Euro 11.08 Billion) in 2019, by 55% more than in 2008, but the share of agriculture declined to 4.3%. The share of the regions in GDP created in agriculture is more balanced ranging between South Muntenia (18.5%) and West (10.5%), only Bucharest-Ilfov (2.9%).  Between GDP produced in agriculture and Romania's GDP it is a positive and strong relationship attested by the correlation coefficient (r  = 0.731), R2 = 0.534, and the regression model, Y = 19.820 x + 29.423 which proved that an increase by one unit in GDP of agriculture will raise Romania's GDP by 49.243 units. To increase GDP in agriculture, farmers have to improve farm size by joining in associations, farm endowment, training level, to apply new technologies more efficient and adapted to climate change, for increasing productivity,  products quality and competitiveness in the external market.
