Corporate Responsibility towards a Silent Stakeholder – The Natural Environment from the CSR Perspective

Abstract:

The increasing manifestations of a global ecological crisis observed in contemporary world require relevant efforts to limit this detrimental phenomenon. For organizations, one of such efforts includes taking up pro-environmental actions i.e. to minimise companies’ negative impact on the natural environment, which at the same time fall under one of the dimensions of the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) which is becoming increasingly popular. The aim of this paper is to identify the actions taken by socially responsible companies towards a silent stakeholder - the natural environment. The paper is composed of three parts. In the first part the place of the natural environment in the operation of the company is identified. In the second part focus is given to the core subject/dimension concerning the natural environment as one of fundamental aspects of the CSR concept. In part three manifestations of companies’ environmental awareness under the CSR concept are identified and presented. The paper is based on a critical literature review and available non-financial reports and existing data.
