Crystalizing the Impact of Technology in the Covid-19 Era on Employees’ Training and Development

Abstract:

This study appraises the impact of technology on employee’s training and development in the covid-19 era in the Nigerian oil and gas sector. The purpose of the study was to determine how technology enhanced training and development in the covid-19 era adopted in oil and gas sector. Also, recommended technology- based trainings and development for employees which in a large extent would yield high organisational productivity. Organisations have adopted strategies such as reduction of working hours, flexible and distance work model, shift-based work system and virtual trainings due to covid-19, but not all sectors and employees have found this applicable to a large extent. Considerably, organisations fail to ensure that the required training for employees to effectively use these technologies adopted by the organisation, which has led to a decline on employee performance in the oil and gas sector. The population of the study used was 406, being the total staff strength of offshore workers of selected firm. A descriptive research design was used in this study along-side a mono-method. Specifically, this research used quantitative method (questionnaire) for collection of data while, structural equation modelling was used to analyze the data collected. The result of the study revealed that technology has significantly impacted the training and development of employees in the oil and gas sector, in the covid-19 era and recommended that as technology keeps advancing and the oil and gas industry continuously receives new methods and equipment for operation, it is imperative to offer practical training for effective results. However, the findings depicted that null hypothesis was rejected.
