Customized Safety Behavior Checklist for Scrubber Installation at Construction Site

Abstract:

Construction industry in Malaysia is influenced by rapid development of the nation and technological progress. Machinery, equipment and new multiple technology usage on construction site are further increasing the risk of accidents in nation building sector. Nevertheless, safety issue is still lacking of emphasize amongst employees on construction site where safety culture is still lacking of application. Organization X is a project based company which is specialized in the installation of scrubber and other air pollution control equipment in Malaysia. In year 2013, 39 cases of incidents have been recorded during scrubber installation activities at construction sites. This situation has not only affected the economic burden due to increased medical expenses but has also affected the work efficiency, resulting in deterioration of company’s performance and reputation. At risk behaviors of workers are identified as the main contributor for accidents at construction sites. In order to control and mitigate the accidents at site during installation of scrubber, the behaviour based safety approach has been used by implementing the use of Safety Behaviour Checklist (SBC), which is customized for use specifically within Organization X, the selected case study of this paper, during installation of scrubber. The paper was done to investigate the at risk behaviors that construction workers may posed and performed during installation activities of scrubber. This paper also assesses further on the impacts of implementing the customized SBC and observation during the installation of scrubber at site. To achieve such improvements, analysis was accomplished effectively and efficiently by using the result from customized SBC and comparing the results of the three month observations. This paper found that the implementation of customized SBC contributes to the improvement of worker s safe behaviour modification.
