Cycling as an Element of Sustainable Urban Mobility – A Case Study of Poland

Abstract:

The introduction of solutions supporting the implementation of sustainable development policy is an important and topical issue. One of the important areas of this concept is sustainable mobility, which is considered both on an international, national and local scale. Sustainable urban mobility can be considered both in the context of environmental protection and the need to ensure efficient, economic and safe urban transport. Cycling transport, whose role has recently increased considerably, deserves attention. The aim of the paper is to show the level of development of cycling in Poland and to present recommendations concerning the directions of further actions. At the beginning of the paper, on the basis of an analysis of documents and literature on the subject the attention was drawn to the importance of cycling and tools supporting its development were identified. Then the most important elements and indicators characterising the level of development of that form of mobility were identified and subjected to further empirical studies. This part of the research was carried out on the basis of analysis of the available national database.
