Abstract:
Today internet-based information systems rely heavily on the new and “modern” Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) rebranded lately as Cloud Computing. Database systems tend to be seen more and more as legacy systems. As SOA architectures need data services, what will be the substitute for “traditional” database systems is an interesting question. How these future data systems, delivering data-related functions as services, will look like? In this paper we will try to outline some of the most important challenges for database systems that occur from the current technological advancements. We foresee some theoretical and technological trends that could help database systems to efficiently respond to these challenges, focusing on active databases and rule systems and also on componentization, easy integration or high scalability that come from the stated objectives of cloud-oriented services.
