Abstract:

The theory and concept of Learning Commons (LC)  has changed the landscape of traditional library that managed the resources as to become the learning-centered place that provides welcoming, bright and open spaces to their users. This is very applicable to the Muslim community as the seeking of knowledge is obligatory for every Muslim.  The role of a mosque has been developed since the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with significant roles not just as a place for Muslim to perform prayers but also as a community learning center that has the multitude of characteristics. Today, it is common to have library services as part of a mosque to support learning activities.  Thus, this quantitative study describes the characteristic of learning commons model for Malaysian State Mosques. A survey, using a questionnaire, was distributed to 384 respondents throughout the state of Selangor. The questionnaire on Characteristics Of Learning Commons focuses on three main domains, namely, learning infrastructure (LI), learning resources (LR) and learning activities (LA), which was designed based on the works of previous researchers. Data were analyzed statistically using descriptive statistics, which include percentages, frequencies and mean rating. Findings revealed that all domains of the characteristics of LCs for Malaysian State Mosques are essential for success.   it is suggested that the mosque library should take a proactive action as to boost this attribute in order to create the learning-oriented environment to the users.
