Delivering Inclusive Growth in the Face of Arab Uprising: The ICT Way

Abstract:

Recent developments in rising Asia have proven that impressive growth trends, structural transformation and poverty reduction can be associated with rising levels of inequality. With massive protests and downfall of authoritarian regimes that spearheaded the rise in the economic fortunes of the Arab world, new questions about the nature and type of growth needed bridge the inequality gap has formed major parts of global international discuss. As new Arab republics begin to examine the way forward with uncertain economic futures, the need for pushing the frontiers of inclusive growth is more pressing than ever before. The power of Information and Communication Technologies in delivering the dividends of growth has been demonstrated by some part of rising Asia (for instance India). With Information Communication Technologies, countries can leapfrog the stages of development while promoting shared prosperity. This paper examines the impact of Information and Communication Technologies in delivering inclusive growth and recommends the ways in which the Arab world can leverage ICT for better inclusiveness.
