Development of Visualization Application (VJBK) for Newly Designed Jig and Fixture for Computer-Assisted Knee Replacement Surgery

Abstract:

A new jig and fixture has been designed to help orthopedic surgeons perform the knee replacement surgery. The jig and fixture is used to align the cutter blade in the right position before sawing begins. It can also eliminate miss orientation and reduce the overall time taken when using computer assisted surgery system. A manual demonstration on how to use the newly designed jig and fixture can be tedious, time consuming and highly costly. Therefore, the use of visualization applications is needed to show the surgeons how new jig and fixture is used during a computer-assisted knee replacement surgery. This paper describes the development process of the visualization system which can be used to train surgeons how to use the newly design jig and fixture for computer-assisted knee replacement surgery. The visualization system utilizes Virtools and Unity3D software as the development platform.
