Economic Determinants of the Development of the Historic Hotel Industry. A Case Study of Poland’s Zachodniopomorskie and Dolnośląskie Provinces

Abstract:

The objective of this publication is to diagnose the key economic factors influencing the development of the historic hotel industry in regional arrangements. A representative group of historic hotels from Poland’s Zachodniopomorskie (Western Pomerania) and Dolnośląskie (Lower Silesia) provinces was surveyed in order to achieve the set objective.

For the purposes of the publication, an analysis of the relevant economic factors influencing the development of historic hotels was carried out. The study was based on the questionnaire survey method. Questionnaires were sent to a purposively selected and representative group of owners and managers of historic hotels of various categories. There are a hundred hotels in both regions and ninety of them participated in the survey. The representatives of two hotels refused to respond to the questionnaire and eight hotels had suspended their business activities and were not providing any hospitality services. One reason for a joint analysis of the historic hotels located in the Lower Silesia and Western Pomerania was the strong links between these regions due to the flow of tourists along the north-south axis. Another reason was related to a large number of historic buildings in both regions, resulting directly from their rich historical legacy.
