Abstract:
Although Romania has significant natural resources, cattle and sheep have shown a downward trend last period. Diseases, bovine spongiform encephalopathy such as (BSE) and transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) have affected the local livestock sector.The domestic meat market is dominated by imports. The demand for beef meat on the world market and the restrictions eliminated on the export of sheep were potential sources of revival for the domestic sector. The occurrence of Bluetongue and the international conjuncture represents cumulative threats to Romanian farmers.The first cases of Bluetongue disease infested animals in Romania were reported this year, at the end of month of august. Access the disease was established on the southern chain of European penetration, Greece-Bulgaria respectively. It is difficult to estimate the economic effect on the Romanian economy. Immediate economic losses due to the eradication of the disease, including compensation for the animals killed. The restrictions imposed on exports of sheep meat and beef due to Bluetongue disease, combined with the prohibition of transactions on Russian market is likely to affect strongly the Romanian sector. The paper proposes an overview of economic effects on the domestic livestock on the first month of the outbreak of the epidemic, a comparative assessment of the implications of the disease on Bulgaria's economy. The materials used for research were scientific articles and treatises, official
