Effect of Public Education on Citizen Participation in Policy Making in Jubek State, South Sudan

Abstract:

Though the Transitional Constitution of Central Equatorial (Jubek) state has provided a framework for public involvement and participation in policymaking processes, it remains theoretical in practice as only few elites continue to make policies on behalf of citizens. This study therefore aimed at examining the effect of Public education on Citizen Participation in policymaking. Specifically, the effect of Awareness on Citizen Participation and the Effect of Literacy on Citizen Participation basing on the continuum concept model. A descriptive survey design was used and target population was drawn from Jubek State in South Sudan where 120 respondents were selected using both stratified sampling and Random Sampling techniques. Data collection was done through the use of questionnaires as the main instrument. Data analysis was split into two first descriptive analysis in the form of frequencies and percentages presented using tables and Second inferential analysis using Pearson correlation. The study major findings indicate level of awareness and literacy has a major effect on enhancing citizen participation in policy making. The study recommends the urgent need of promoting Literacy and Awareness among citizens of Jubek State in South Sudan in order to enhance Citizen Participation in Policy making.
