Effectiveness of Performance Appraisal: A study of Private Secondary School Teachers

Abstract:

Despite the importance of performance appraisal as a significant tool for managing and measuring employee's performance, a notable gap on it exists in the literature of educational sector, especially in secondary school in our context. In this study, we investigate the influence of performance appraisal on teachers effectiveness in  selected private secondary school in southwest Nigeria. This empirical study utilized Quantitative data gathered from 85 teachers working in the school. Descriptive analysis was done on the collected data. The findings revealed that the teacher performances have been greatly positively affected by the annual performance appraisal being carried out by the management of their school. In addition, the results indicated that the annual performance appraisal has greatly influenced the personal development of female teachers than the male teachers. Implications were stated and the area for further studies were recommended.
