Effects of the New 5-hectare Sanitary Land Fill Facility at Tacloban City, Leyte, Philippines

Abstract:

Through the enactment of Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, local government units (LGUs) in the Philippines are given emphasis as the main game changer to address environmental problems caused by improper waste management. This act ensures that LGUs all over the country will implement the best environmental programs, policies and practices that will ensure the proper segregation, collection, transport, storage treatment and disposal of solid waste. With this, the LGU of Tacloban City launched the Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Program which includes maintaining an environmentally-sound Sanitary Land Fill Facility. The SLF is a highly engineered facility wherein environmental measures are considered and implemented, it has synthetic liner made of high density polyethylene material, so garbage residue will not seep to the groundwater. It has also a hospital waste facility-infectious materials and Septage facilities. Hence, the new SLF Facility possess great impact on the solid waste management of the Tacloban City and creates positive change for the lives of the Filipino people.
