Employers’ Satisfaction on Accounting Service Performance: A Case of Nigerian University’s Internship Program

Abstract:

The accounting profession is ever evolving with changes in the business environment. It is the expectation of industry-based professionals that the students will possess comprehensive accounting knowledge and skills needed in the work place. The primary objective of the study is to examine the level of employers’ satisfaction with the skill set of the intern during the period of internship. The skills prescribed by the International Accounting Education and Standards Board on professional and technical competence is used in the study. The study employs primary data through mail questionnaire, with Covenant University Accounting Internship Program as the focus. The questionnaire is administered to employers of the students for the enrolled in the 2016 internship program. The opinions of the respondents are analysed using Kendall W test. Findings of the study reveal that there is no significant difference in employers’ level of satisfaction with the interns’ intellectual, personal and organisational skills. However, there was a significant difference in the level of employers’ satisfaction with the interns’ interpersonal and communication skill and technical skill. Therefore, deliberate efforts should be made by accounting educators to enhance student’s interpersonal skill, communication skill and technical skill. Also, a feedback form be attached to the log book of students, this will provide readily available information for the assessments of students’ performance during internship
