Enterprise Knowledge Portals: The Concept and Components

Abstract:

Information is now coming centre stage in companies anxious to maintain their competitive advantage in the dot.com economy as electronic business-to-business exchanges rapidly emerge. The technical issues of being able to search across a wide range of different database and document types are now being solved through enterprise information portal applications (EIP) often referred to as corporate portals. Knowledge portals make an important contribution to enabling enterprise knowledge management by providing users with a consolidated, personalized user interface that allows efficient access to various types of (structured and unstructured) information. Today's portal systems allow combining access modules to different information sources side by side on a single portal webpage. Creating Enterprise knowledge Portal in an organization with centralized leadership would be easier.   The cultural changes require championship to re-define the business and reach the level of collaboration, consistency, efficiency and productivity that would generate the appropriate ROI. Again, the knowledge management system has to be so good, so valuable that it sells itself on an ongoing basis. Knowledge Portals represent a solution to this challenge, as they provide a flexible knowledge environment to a potentially large number of users. So this paper outlines the concept of enterprise knowledge portals the Architecture, Components and the essence in today organization through the detailed descriptions of that concept and how it is different from enterprise information portals also the future of enterprise knowledge portals.
