Abstract:
Sustainable development requires equilibrium between economic growth, social expansion and environmental protection. The construction industry itself has to be sustainable and give weight to environmental matters, over and above economic gains and social obligations in order to pursue sustainable development. This paper explores and identifies the position of construction projects with respect to implementing the measures to improve environmental management in construction. The postal questionnaire was the chosen method to retrieve this data. Four major themes in were investigated in order to identify the strategic position of construction projects to attain environmental management in construction contracts. First, is the influence of the external environment on construction projects; second, the capabilities of construction projects; third, the expectations and purposes required of construction projects; and fourth the environmental management elements to be included in the contract documents.
