Abstract:
Large traffic queues and their influence on quality of life in Belgium have forced a reexamination of the existing public transportation and its ability to satisfy actual local needs. The new sustainable development constrain of encouraging the train transportation usage has required an assessment of the physical and behavioral characteristics of the user population (customers). Within this context, the article presents an analysis of currently existing data and improvements that could be done in terms of seating and ambient arrangement as proposals by taking into consideration the ergonomics perspective. In addition, future research needs are identified for a commuter train seating design in order to provide a better travel experience to users.
