Ethical Leadership in the Czech Armed Forces

Abstract:

Organizations and institutions, including security, must consider whether their development and future direction are in line with accepted, ethically acceptable principles (Brown and Trevino, 2006). This also applies to the state security institution Army of the Czech Republic (hereinafter referred to as CAF). According to the authors of this text, it is possible to further develop the CAF in accordance with the ethical principles that are binding on it, by applying ethical leadership to its leadership and management system. The text, which has the character of a descriptive study, in its first part deals with the theoretical foundations of ethical leadership and on their basis, generates the concept of functional ethical leadership. In the second part of the text, the authors apply this concept to CAF conditions. The main method of acquiring knowledge was the content analysis of the results of already performed research and the subsequent synthesis of acquired knowledge. This descriptive study confirmed that the application and development of ethical leadership in CAF are possible. At the same time, it sets out the conditions that need to be met in this context: sufficient time, the right setting of educational and development processes, the adoption of ethical standards and norms at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels, and the emphasis on ethically responsible behavior and actions of military leaders.
