Eustress and Academic Staff Performance in Nigeria: A Conceptual Approach

Abstract:

Workplace stress causes various psychological and physiological problems over time. It places significant psychological, physiological, and financial costs on both the individual employee and his or her organization. The physical and psychological demands of workers at the tertiary level of education make them more vulnerable to high levels of stress. However, researchers have proved eustress as another type of stress capable of motivating an individual to perform well and work with interest. Therefore, the aim of this study is to propose a conceptual model showing the link between eustress and academic staff performance. As a result of the conceptual model proposed, the study suggests that being optimistic and maintaining a positive perception towards work demands will increase their chances of responding positively to stressors and experiencing eustress leading to enhanced performance among academic staff in tertiary institutions.
