Evolution of Funding Models of Intangible Cultural Heritage: The Case of the St. Mary’s Trumpet Call in Kraków

Abstract:

This paper analyzes the long-term evolution of funding models for the St. Mary's Trumpet Call in Kraków from the 14th century to the present. While numerous studies highlight the benefits of cultural heritage, less attention is paid to the financial mechanisms required for its preservation. This study addresses this gap by examining an intangible heritage practice dependent on community engagement. The findings reveal three key aspects of heritage sustainability. First, the financing of the tradition transformed from a historical mix of municipal appropriations, royal patronage, the elite civic parish community, and private donations into a stable contemporary system. Second, the study demonstrates the interdependence between intangible and tangible heritage, as the tradition requires the maintenance of St. Mary's Tower. Third, diversified funding sources historically ensured continuity during financial instability. The paper concludes that the sustainability of multi-source funding models depends on both financial resources and institutional coordination among stakeholders.
