Abstract:
The Project Management Office (PMO) is a crucial component in contemporary project management, providing various levels of support and oversight to ensure the successful delivery of projects. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review on the different models and roles of PMOs, highlighting their evolution, classification, and impact on organizational performance. PMOs can range from supportive units offering training and best practices to directive entities controlling project execution. Research indicates that organizations with well-established PMOs achieve higher project success rates, improved delivery, and better alignment with strategic goals. This study categorizes PMOs into multiple models, including Business Unit PMOs, Project-Specific PMOs, and Global PMOs, among others, each tailored to specific organizational needs. The analysis underscores the importance of aligning PMO functions with organizational culture, project complexity, and leadership support to maximize their effectiveness. The findings aim to guide organizations in selecting and implementing the most suitable PMO structure to enhance project management outcomes and organizational success.
